VietNamNet Bridge – Phan Thi Thuy Trang and Orchibaatar Tumurbaatar took the yellow jersey at the Return to Dien Bien Phu Cycling Tournament, which concluded yesterday in the historic city of Dien Bien.
HCM City's Nguyen Thi Hoang Oanh and Masziyaton Mohd Radzi, of Malaysia, were second and third, respectively.
The 42km final leg victory helped Trang grab the overall victory and steal the yellow jersey from Pham Thi Thuy Lien of Domesco Dong Thap, who was stuck in the second group of riders this stage, finishing three minutes later.
The second overall position went to Hoang Oanh while Vu Thi Thuong of Son La came in third.
Trang also took the green jersey for racer who pocketed the highest number of points, 69, during the six stages of the tournament.
Binh Duong Water Supply, whose riders did not grab a title but finished well in every stage, took the prize for best team. Domesco Dong Thap and Agrifish An Giang were second and third in this category.
Among the men, Tumurbaatar, who held on to the yellow jersey, and his Mongolian teammate Khangarid Naran, proved their power on mountainous terrain. They were always in the leading group of riders, which helped them keep their ranking even though they were not always in the top three.
When the tour passed the 45km mark, the duo were among the pack of 10 cyclists who pulled ahead to the finish. Mai Nguyen Hung of Sai Gon 1 Plant Protection, won in 2:02.30.
His teammate Le Van Duan was second ahead of Mai Cong Hieu, of Domesco Dong Thap.
Tumurbaatar and Naran took first and second overall.
The final stage winner was Hung who also took the green jersey with 49 points.
Mongolia were the best male team with a total time of 38:23.16 for the tour. They were followed by Domesco Dong Thap and Sai Gon 1.
The competition, which drew 125 rivals from local and two foreign clubs, was held to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the battle Dien Bien Phu today where the Vietnamese army routed the French colonial forces.
The men's race was 555km while the women rode 320km.
Both races helped identify excellent athletes for the national cycling team.
A cash prize of more than VND40 million (US$2,200) will be offered to the yellow jersey (best time) winner.
