Masked thieves install cameras at two ATMs

VietNamNet Bridge - The joint-stock DongA Bank has uncovered what could be a new card-skimming attempt through the use of cameras illegally installed at two of its ATMs in Ha Noi.

Card skimming is the collection of card numbers and PINs for the purpose of stealing money from bank accounts.

The bank found late Sunday a camera with a 2GB USB installed on an ATM in Hoang Quoc Viet Street, thanks to information from a card user and another found in a nearby ATM.

Tran Phuong Binh, general director for DongA Bank, said that it could be a new kind of crime in the country.

The image of a masked man was captured by the bank’s monitor.

The bank is working with agencies on the case and has already checked all of its 1,200 ATMs nationwide.

No further unauthorised cameras were found.

DongA Bank ATMs have vigilance equipment, so any installation of a skimming device at the card reader will be sent to its IT centre.

Binh said cardholders should be careful not to lose their cards, change their PIN periodically, and avoid using the numbers of their birthdays, house or motorcycle for their PIN.

He also urged them to use the bank’s SMS Banking Services for better protection.
